A half-zip sits between a sweatshirt and a collared knit. That is its appeal, but also why it can feel awkward: zip it high over a stiff shirt and it becomes quite formal; leave it open over a crumpled tee and it can look unfinished. Start with a simple base and decide how much structure you want.

1. Straight jeans and a visible T-shirt neckline
Try a charcoal or navy knit with mid-blue straight jeans and plain trainers. Leave the zip open just enough to show the neckline of a white or off-white tee. A small contrast at the neck breaks up the dark upper half without adding another statement piece. Let the hem sit naturally rather than pulling it down over your hips.
Look at where the jeans meet the shoes. One soft break is usually easier to wear than a stack of denim. A heavily bunched ankle can make even a simple outfit feel busier than intended.
2. A jacket with room through the sleeves
For a colder day, add an outer layer that closes comfortably over the jumper. Bend both elbows and reach forward before heading out: a jacket that looks fine standing still may pull across a textured knit. Keep the jumper collar inside the jacket rather than forcing two upright collars to compete.
3. Dark trousers for a casual evening
Swap blue denim for dark trousers and choose clean, understated footwear. You do not need a shirt underneath unless the occasion calls for it. A smooth tee often makes the neckline sit more neatly. Avoid treating a knitted half-zip as formalwear; the venue and dress code still decide what is appropriate.
Choose fit from a garment you own
Lay a comfortable jumper flat and compare its chest width, body length and sleeve length with any measurements supplied for the new one. A labelled medium is not a universal measurement. If the product page does not provide enough information, ask before choosing a size, especially when you plan to layer underneath.
The easy finishing check
Stand back from the mirror. If the collar, waistband and ankle all look crowded, simplify one of them. Usually opening the zip a little, changing to a cleaner tee neckline or adjusting the trouser hem does more than adding accessories.
